This image is of a sheet of shape-shifting plastic debris adrift in the Indian Ocean a momentary vision of the future awaiting aquatic species and habitat.

In 2003, a major scientific study ("Rapid Worldwide Depletion of Predatory Fish Communities" by R. Myers & B. Worm) concluded that large predatory fish biomass today is only about 10% of pre-industrial levels. A 2006 study ("Impacts of Biodiversity Loss on Ocean Ecosystem Services" by B. Worm, et. al.) concluded that if humans continued to plunder ocean resources while polluting the sea and atmosphere at current rates, all commercially harvested sea species will have collapsed by 2048. Numerous peer-reviewed studies have echoed this scenario of an empty ocean by mid-century or sooner.
